According to a Linkedin post from Ratandeep Tripathi, Founder Vjaitra Air Mobility, Vjaitra has announced that its advanced aviation division is now focused only hydrogen fuel cell technology to power the VJ-600Max, its long-range eVTOL aircraft.
“To power long-range regional flights, Vjaitra considered hybrid-electric engines but ultimately chose a different path,” said the post. “The VJ-600Max represents a significant leap in Vjaitra’s aerospace roadmap. While the company continues to refine its battery-powered solutions for short-range urban hops—aimed at launching passenger services by 2028 in high-traffic markets like Mumbai and Bengaluru—the VJ-600Max is designed for the distances in between….We made a commitment to sustainability and zero emissions. It didn’t make sense for us to go backward towards fossil fuel hybrids. The path forward for India’s regional connectivity is the hydrogen fuel cell.”
Vjaitra expects the VJ-600 Max to bridge the gap between cities that are currently separated by hours of road traffic. The company views hydrogen not as a “technology problem,” but as an “application maturity problem,” focusing their R&D on adapting this clean energy for high-altitude aviation.
