A Linkedin post from Rex J Alexander, Owner & President of Five-Alpha LLC, has highlighted the classification of a new type of airport – “private airport of public interest – which came into use at the start of July in Florida. According to the post, this is “a private airport engaged in air ambulance operations, commercial air tour operations, commuter operations, on-demand operations, public charter operations, scheduled operations, or supplemental operations.”
“A private airport of public interest must obtain a certificate from the department before allowing aircraft operations,” continues the post. “The department shall issue a certificate after a final inspection finds the airport to be in compliance with all certificate requirements. The certificate is subject to any reasonable conditions the department deems necessary to protect the public. A private airport that was engaged in operations associated with a private airport of public interest on or before July 1, 2025, must obtain a certificate from the department by July 1, 2030.
