“FAA publishes NPRM for first eVTOL pilot certification rules” – GAMA

A Linkedin post by David Dunning, Director, Global Innovation & Policy at the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA), reports that the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) publication of the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) “Integration of Powered-Lift: Pilot Certification and Operations; Miscellaneous Amendments Related to Rotorcraft and Airplanes” (SFAR)  “represents a critical landmark in paving the way for the safe integration of cutting-edge electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) and AAM technologies.”

“The SFAR is a proposed regulation that seeks to establish the appropriate rules for certifying the first group of pilots for powered-lift aircraft,” said David Dunning. “It will also set temporary rules for how these aircraft can operate, allowing the FAA to gather important information to make informed decisions about permanent regulations in the future….Additional key considerations in the SFAR include Pilot Certification and the qualification of Powered-Lift Flight Simulation Training Devices (FSTDs). The FAA proposes to add regulatory flexibility to allow the qualification of powered-lift FSTDs using components of existing standards for airplanes and helicopters, where applicable, to ensure an equivalent level of safety.”
