Japan and Singapore discuss UAS/AAM collaboration

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) and the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) announced on May 26 that they will deepen collaboration to meet rising demand for air travel – including uncrewed and advanced air mobility (AAM) operations – between Singapore and Japan, in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

At the 4th Singapore-Japan Dialogue on Aviation Collaboration held in Singapore on 22 and 23 May 2025, Mr Han Kok Juan, Director-General of CAAS and Ms Nakayama Rieko, Assistant Vice-Minister for International Aviation of Japan Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism discussed collaboration across six areas: air connectivity, aviation safety, airport innovation and technology, sustainable aviation, air traffic management, and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and AAM.

“With the rapid growth of UAS and electric vertical take-off landing (eVTOL) aircraft technologies, CAAS and JCAB have been collaborating closely on the regulatory requirements and concept of operations for the safe integration of these technologies,” CAAS said. “Singapore and Japan are working with 22 other Asia-Pacific States and Administrations to develop the Asia-Pacific Reference Materials to facilitate AAM operations, which is expected to be published in July 2025.”

The annual Singapore-Japan Dialogue on Aviation Collaboration follows the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation in 2022 which established the strategic framework for civil aviation collaboration between the two countries.
