Vertiport and eVTOL airspace integration core areas for the SESAR JU research agenda

In the latest Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) JU call for industry participation in U-space research there are 26 topics identified for further research, with many focus on advanced air mobility, vertiport and eVTOL airspace integration issues.

These include:

  • Extension of U-space ecosystem
  • E-conspicuity
  • Integration of drones and crewed aircraft in shared geozones
  • U-space services for certified (crewed or uncrewed) aircraft
  • Vertiport management for crewed vertically capable aircraft (VCA)
  • Advanced vertiport and VCA U-space services
  • Crewed IFR VCA
  • Automation of the VCA cockpit and remote pilot’s working position
  • Automatic take-off & landing (ATOL) for crewed or uncrewed VCA and helicopters
  • ATC and flight information service (FIS) automation support

These were all highlighted during the  “Supporting the Drone Strategy 2.0” Brussels event last week organised by the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) joint undertaking. The event brought together U-space experts from across the European Union to assess the progress and challenges of implementing U-space areas in the EU and provided attendees with an update of three critical three Digital Sky Demonstrators, U-ELCOME, BURDI.eu and EALU-AER, which for the last few years have been researching core U-space technologies and processes. These projects have all reached technical readiness level 8 – “Actual system completed and “flight qualified” through test and demonstration.”
