The North Texas Regional Transportation Council (RTC) has approved USD477,500 in local funds through the Advanced Air Mobility Readiness Call for Projects to help four North Texas airports install charging infrastructure to support the growth of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
“The chargers will be installed at Denton Regional Airport, Fort Worth Meacham International Airport, Granbury Regional Airport and Greenville Municipal Airport,” said an RTC press release. “Greenville Municipal was awarded the maximum of USD200,000 for its project, while the other three will each receive USD92,500 for charging infrastructure.
“This funding will expand the regional network of electric aircraft charging infrastructure and improve the ability of the participating airports to support future eVTOL and other advanced air mobility operations,” said the release. “The call for projects represents a strategic investment in the region’s ability to provide the infrastructure necessary to support this developing technology.”
“We want to make sure that as eVTOL aircraft become available and operations begin to scale, our airports are ready to support them,” said Ernest Huffman, program manager, aviation planning for NCTCOG. “This investment is about building out that regional network now. Every airport we add with charging capability gives operators more options for where they can fly and helps North Texas support the eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), Center for Advanced Aviation Technologies (CAAT) and the private investment that will follow as this industry grows.”
Earlier this month, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) officially introduced Project Nexus at Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport as part of the Federal Aviation Administration’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program. The Alliance kickoff included flight demonstrations and marked the beginning of real-world operations intended to help the FAA and its partners understand how to safely integrate these aircraft into the existing aviation system.
North Texas’ airport readiness initiatives are closely tied to the Center of Advanced Aviation Technologies, said the RTC. This initiative accelerates AAM implementation through strategic planning, infrastructure development, operational integration, and workforce pipelines, establishing the region as a national hub for research, testing and technology development.
