China’s CATL Debrecen, Hungary, subsidiary has announced in a Linkedin post that its 250 Wh/kg eVTOL battery is now in mass production.
“The entire production, inspection and testing process was overseen by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC),” said the post. “Our battery system passed thermal runaway and thermal propagation testing: even when multiple cells were overheated simultaneously, heat did not propagate to neighbouring cells, and no self-sustaining thermal runaway occurred. With an energy density of 350 Wh/kg, the system uses prismatic cells, setting a new technological standard for aviation. It will fly first in AutoFlight’s passenger eVTOLs, while the technology could also open up new possibilities for future alternative-powertrain vehicles and passenger aviation. “
